Weve been avid fans of Michael Johns since the beginning of Idol and one thing that we both enjoy most about the journey the Idols make is the progression made both musically and personally
This video is a sort of retrospective of Michael Johns journey this past year and as Eleanor Roosevelt said people grow through experience if they meet life honestly and courageously This is how character is built
We both believe that Michael has shown exceptional character on and off the stage and thats what makes him one of our favourite people ever
By the way this video is long overdue We created it after the first AI7 Mash Up and before the second Mash Up So it covers everything from the start of his journey on Idol all the way to the concert before Tulsa

Audiovisual artwork exploring the female voice The source materials for Peep Show consist of interviews with female vocalists discussing their experiences and relationships with band members male and female audiences managers and sound crews and imagessounds of my vocal cords in action I was assisted by the National Voice Centre and ENT surgeon Dr Jonathan Livesey to carry out endoscopy to capture the video of my vocal cords This involved the insertion of a probe containing a miniaturised camera through the nasal cavity and down into the back of the throat An ambiguous play on female sexual physiology is thus deliberately established to counterpoint the monologues of the women All of the sound materials are voice at times untreated and at other times subjected to various digital processing and resynthesis methods such as convolution mutation and granular synthesis The original piece was mixed for 4 channel surround The installation piece is binaurally encoded to produce an immersive listening experience Technical Considerations The piece was created using Media 100 ProTools SoundHack SoundEffects Peak Premiere Photoshop Kurzweil K2000 and was mixed in 4 channel surround at the University of Western Sydney using a Yamaha O2R All of the sound materials are voice at times untreated and at other times subjected to various digital processing and resynthesis methods such as convolution mutation and granular synthesis The piece was originally conceived as a multichannel work but to avoid inherent problems of sound works in gallery spaces intruding on other works a second version was conceived as a binaural mix for headphones As can be seen in the above photograph the headphonebinauralgallery version is presented as if it were a peep show where the audience must peer through a slot in a door to see the video image whilst wearing the headphones see photos This achieved the desired intimacy for the viewer and the sense of being a voyeur

Buy now from iTunes httptinyurlcomiTunesmaegraith Buy album at official site httpwwwrichardmaegraithcom This performance video recorded at The Basement July 2008 by Live at the Basement ALBUM REVIEW BY SYDNEY MORNING HERALD 2008 The opening of this unusual disc seems to promise breezy French movie jazz a genre I perversely enjoy There is wordless unison voice and even a piano accordion Things change rapidly Many tracks have brilliant vocals with lyrics by Kristin Beradi They are love songs but clues tell me the loved one is a symbol of Christ in the Renaissance tradition One clue is that Richard Maegraith is a committed Christian One song is for Beradi39s baby Maegraith is also a superb tenor saxophonist with a handsome tone and powerful expressiveness As the disc progresses his solos become more and more remarkable Jonathan Zwarts39s bass is a powerful element This is not happy clappy but serious sometimes disturbing Now you39re in the know you may even contemplate the idea of original sin in Eden39s Story RICHARD MAEGRAITH BIO by Matt McMahon Richard Maegraith like the musicians he has assembled for this recording is one of the most respected musicians in the city in which he spends most of his time in Sydney It is always tempting to list the great achievements of a musicians career and the great players with whom he has worked over years of performances and recordings But improvising is always about being in the moment making real time decisions and looking ahead which is something all of the musicians on this recording manifest again and again throughout these series of pieces Richard and I played together a lot when we first met as students at the Sydney Conservatorium in 1993 He displayed in those days the skills that would serve him well on his path towards a career in music technique versatility a gift for melody composing and arranging flair deep knowledge of and respect for the great contributors on his chosen instruments But what I hear on this recording are the parts of Richards nature shining through He is a person with a great commitment to music and a person of great integrity in all parts of his life His warm fluid sound is used in the service of deep communication Richards compositions on this recording display a love for jazz but venture into other territory original territory whenever the expression demands it Much preparation is needed for a recording session such as this composing selecting which compositions will work well together But in the end what we hear is the result of Richard asking other musical spirits to come on a journey with him to a place that by its nature is always going to be somewhat unknown
