War Against Drugs You39ll never win the Attached is the only music video Hidden Agenda ever made Intended to coincide with their selfproduced indie release Deconstructo 1998 it was slotted for airplay on Aussie music programme Rage But their FM radio counterpart JJJ refused to give the accompanying track airplay citing their reason as Its too controversial Given JJJs heavy fondness at the time for championing such sensationalist gangsta rappers as NWA etc it seemed a bit rich especially since Rage were happy enough to give it a whirl However it wasnt just JJJ barring their way into Oz rock history The period 19951999 Hidden Agendas brief life were about the most desolate an original guitarband has faced This was the era of Dance and their genre was way out of favour with fashion a pity given their powerful live presence their impressive tightness as a unit and the fiercely original nature of their music Its fairly obvious that the frontman cofounder and warped mind behind Hidden Agenda Nathan Sykes was no conventional singer He started out as a performance poet a title which soon stuck in his craw Forming a partnership with longterm friend Jason Wilson the former guitarist for such 1980s Mod outfits as The Motif The Interceptors and The Effect Sykes found someone who could interpret his song ideas which was important given his nonmusical background Together they created some of the best most original Indie tracks never to be heard Taking on board Jasons old drummer Steve Piper and later the mercenary bassist John Skerlec Hidden Agenda set about taking on every spare gig that could come their way In spite of the graveyard that was live music at the time Hidden Agenda put their all into their shows proving a difficult act to follow Yet the strain of banging their heads against the wall of an uninterested music biz took its toll Ironically enough despite wanting to put as much distance between himself and spoken word performance as he could Sykes was the only band member to attend Hidden Agendas final gig the others having pulled the pin Performing his lyrics solo as a support with his mates from HipHopmetal fusion crew The Parkside Killers at their reunion gig at Sydneys Iron Duke Hotel in 1999 Sykes found himself right back where he started
