In 1998 respected Australian music magazine Juice labeled Crow as the best band in Australia since The
Birthday Party Crow had releases on Phantom Half A Cow RooArt and BMG and their evocative and
influential music is widely acknowledged as leaving an indelible mark upon the Australian musical
landscape
Well with an inner city legend like Crow where does one begin Does one litter it with superlatives and
hyperbole terms which are more a tool of marketing graduates than that of a fan Definitely not Crow the
lovely 4 letter word they were made a huge presence in a city defined by its rock and rollpopthrash
lineage Local magazine Juice in 1998 labeled them to be the best band in Australia since the Birthday
Party High praise indeed but unnecessary and very spoiled For how could one be termed the best Should
they not be considered one of the more important bands since then Crow were a breath of fresh air They
defied categorisation a band who simply defined difference and that for me and many made a fine love
affair To understand Crow the band is to endure a journey of emotive qualities which soared at its best
moments and plunged at its worse The early Crow years from 1988 to 1992 were a shambolic affair and for
many the most memorable The excitement of band who could so easily derail was well worth its ticket
Both Peter vocals and guitar Fenton and John Fenton drums such nervy personalities that they are
played on sheer energy and rawness Bassist Jim Woff and lead guitaraxeman Peter Archer helped this
spark no end Tracks from their first vinyl Sunburnt Throats and Happy Thunderclouds Phantom like the
epic 9 minute Charley Horses and the achingly beautiful Sourpuss echo this claim To witness an
earlier Crow show was an affair to be believed I remember many an overseas band ie The Verlaines and
Straitjacket Fits being blown away by their intensity Rather than showering over you their music had
that special quality of moving through you like drugs can but less expensive Later on the band lost the
likes of Fenton J and Archer but not before they recorded a memorable Australian album called My Kind
of Pain HAC 19 that was subsequently nominated for an ARIA award in 1993 Recorded and produced by
Steve Albini Big Black in 1992 and remixed by local Tim Whitten in 1993 it was an album that
reflected a more mature sound particularly evident in Railhead and the cracking How and Why Wonder
John Fenton left the band not long after My Kind of Pain and was replaced by Andy Marks Lunarcide
Another Half A Cow release followed with Helicon Days in 1994 Extensive touring followed and it wasnt
long before the band became hot property as color spreads on weekly magazines started to occur The band
was snapped up by large local label Roo Art who released their second album LiLoing in 1995 Peter
Archer then moved to Melbourne in 1996 to start a family and this left the band without one of its real
creators Though the extraordinary talents of Chris Abrahams and Michael Christie were added on keyboards
a more stripped back sound evolved and this is very evident on their last player Play With Love in
1998 Though the said album received industry kudos it was not the necessary amount of sales support
needed for a major label like BMG Crow will be sorely missed Any memory is a worthy one Bob

They are the real life coneheads In 2004 on a remote island in the South Pacific exclusive footage was shot of headbinding or skull elongation which the Lonely Planet said had long since died out On what became an impromptu largely unplanned adventurefilled expedition the filmmakers found that not only were these longfala hed Small Nambas tribe members alive and well but contrary to Lonely Planets assertion they were binding the heads of newborn babies in timehonoured fashion Led by their progressive chief they had moved out of the dense jungle to the shoreline just weeks earlier In this clip longfala heds listen to an island string band
Where big heels are beaten by a long head
By Sunanda Creagh Sydney Morning Herald
Posted Wednesday October 27 2004
Concepts of beauty are relative
If you want to pay a Vanuatuan a compliment call them a Longfala Hed The pidgin English term for intelligent has its roots in an incredible form of body modification head elongationAnd according to Kirk Huffman an expert in head elongation those who practise it wonder why others do not
From the point of view of the cultures that practised head elongation its best to describe it as head beautification says Huffman a research associate at the Australian Museum
Huffman an anthropologist has studied the practice for more than 20 years on Malakula Vanuatus second largest island which boasts a proud tradition of binding babies skulls to produce a coneshaped head
Some cultures are into pyramids these cultures are into cones says Huffman
The process is simple but laborious About a month after birth the babys head is smeared with oil to soften the skin A soft bandage made from the inner bark of a banana tree is then wound tightly round the head and covered by a woven basket To keep the cap in place the head is bound again with fibre The process is repeated daily until the child can walk producing a conical head
The technique was carried out on both men and women and can still be found in parts of Vanuatu It was considered aesthetically desirable but Huffman says Vanuatuan head elongation also has cultural significance
In southern Malakula many cultures have a belief in a spiritual hero called Ambat who had a very long head Theres also a belief that head beautification increases your memory he says
Huffman says head binding does not mean squashed brains If its done properly there are no side effects he says
Head elongation has been practised in many places One South American culture specialised in bilobal modification tying a string around the head so that it would grow into two bulbs
Theres an Indian tribe in Columbia who are nicknamed plateheads because up until 1947 they were binding the skull in a way that flattens but makes it round says Huffman
Europe has also embraced head modification One 17th century French text recommended midwives bind the skulls of babies to increase memory storage space
Huffman says it continued into the 19th century in parts of France Germany and Eastern Europe The last known instance was recorded by a doctor in a French mountain village in 1925
For Huffman head binding has to be put into a cultural context
Its considered beautiful and why not Humans throughout the world have done all sorts of things to their bodies Look at white women today they wear high heels and get Botox
I remember sitting in the capital of Vanuatu looking through a modern fashion magazine People from the outer islands who had come in with me picked up one of the magazines and said I feel sorry for them I said Why and he said Look theyre all starving They are not being fed enough
I just laughed and said They think thats beautiful

Stellar the hits Violent Part Of Me Every Girl Undone What You Do All It Takes One More Day the list goes on and on Their 1999 debut album Mix set New Zealands radio waves alight and Stellar quickly became Sony Musics biggest selling kiwi band The acclaim wasnt just sales based with Stellar securing eight Tui Awards for Mix and its 2001 follow up Magic Line
After Magic Line the band took some time out for expansion singer Boh Runga went to live in Los Angeles to hone her skills as a songwriter
The opportunity came up to base myself in LA My publisher introduced me to working songwriters over there people who were writing for artists like Christina Aguilera Meatloaf and Ricky Martin
It was an amazing experience being thrown into a situation where I would be in a room with a complete stranger with amazing musical credentials and hold my own By the end of the day we would normally have a great pop song or at least the basis of a great pop song
I got to sit down with Wendy Melvoin Prince and the Revolution and record our song in Frank Sinatras old studio I wrote Miracles with Kevin Savigar Rod Stewarts song writer And I penned Whiplash with Shelly Peiken whos written major hits like Meredith Brooks Bitch and Christina Aguileras Genie In A Bottle
Meanwhile drummer Andrew Maclaren and guitarist Chris Van De Geer both concentrated on building a stateoftheart recording studio while simultaneously producing albums for other artists Bassist Kurt Shanks took time out in Sydney
The band swapped ideas via the internet to keep the songwriting process flowing with Kurt and Boh returning to NZ for recording stints
Boh admits to some nerves the first time the band got together again Weve always been our own harshest critics she says Id written what I truly believe are about the best batch of songs Ive every come up with but didnt know how theyd be received until I sat down and played them to the boys She neednt have worried
The band then set about unifying the songs into a cohesive album New contenders arose as the band fed off each other Asked what listeners should expect Andrew says Weve stripped it back so the essence of these songs can clearly speak Weve made our strongest album to date

DD Smash was Dave Dobbyns band after Th Dudes
In mid1981 Dobbyn forged his coup de grace Dave Dobbyns Divers Thankfully a name change eventuated to DD Smash A guitardriven four piece the band settled straight into live work Auckland venues were at their height and work was plentiful The fan base fattened by the week
By late 81 DD Smash signed a recording deal and immediately set about recording their debut album with Ian Morris in the producers chair
DD Smash released their debut album in 1982 Titled Cool Bananas it debuted in the national chart at 1 an historic first It remained in the chart for 24 weeks and became triple gold The albums biggest hit was the fantastic Devil You Know In 82 the Top Male Vocalist award was won by Dobbyn Top Group went to DD Smash Cool Bananas won Album of the Year Ian Morris got Producer of the Year for it and the album even won Engineer of the Year and Best Sleeve Design
The band toured relentlessly to a strong response and in mid82 journeyed to Australia for an investigative trip They worked regularly and Dobbyn continued to write They returned to NZ in October and Dobbyn quickly recruited a brass section A new sound fell into place
A new single was recorded in Auckland in 1983 and released shortly after Outlook for Thursday crashed into the national chart and peaked at 3 spending 23 weeks in the chart The nation was enthralled with the new brassy DD Smash and the quirky video which played week after week on Ready To Roll The single achieved gold status
Radio with Pictures devoted a live TV special to DD Smash which was subsequently released as the album Live Deep in the Heart of Taxes The band monopolised the annual record awards for the second year in a row The Top Male Vocalist award was again won by Dobbyn Top Group went to DD Smash for the second year running Outlook for Thursday was Single of the Year and Live Deep in the Heart of Taxes was voted Album of the Year DD Smash was Most Popular Band and Video of the Year went to Outlook for Thursday
Dobbyn and his band moved to Sydney to record their second studio album and world domination seemed imminent He finished 1983 by getting married
This time the producer was Charles Fisher Released in 1984 The Optimist was an unqualified success spawning two hit singles Whaling and Magic What She Do It eventually outsold its predecessor The albums sophisticated production and eclectic repertoire were a marked contrast to the twinguitar elementary tenor of Cool Bananas Touring continued with Dobbyns bynow lineup of principally Australian musicians
The quirky infectious pop songs seemed to come naturally Outlook for Thursday Magic What She Do But the purity of a classic songwriter was always there On stage with DD Smash he would take time out for Guilty his torch song debut Whaling is a timeless seashanty written on a beer mat one lonely night and now an unofficial national anthem
A celebration of the beginning of the 1984 summer turned into mayhem thanks to the combination of the crowd drinking all afternoon in the hot sun and overenthusiastic riot police Dobbyn tried to calm things down from the stage but the words he used were badly chosen Dobbyn subsequently found himself charged with inciting the riot
There was no point touring to support an album called The Optimist Dobbyn laughs now but then after two years as the most popular musician in the country there was a sense of betrayal
